Memorial Day event at Belmont Hills CC draws 40 players

Belmont Hills Country Club hosted its annual Memorial Day tournament on Monday that featured 10 teams and 40 total players.

The team of Clay Wood, James Newton, Chuck Poindexter and Tom LeCron prevailed in the event with a round of 61.

They were a shot better than the squad of Anthony Scarnecchia, Jennifer Scarnecchia, Larry Moore Jr. and Larry Moore Sr.

The third-place team was comprised of Clay Bethel, Mark Bukmir, John Estate and Charles Melchiori. They teamed to post a 63.

Skinds were recorded by Bethel. Bukmir, Estadt and Melchiori for the two they posted on the seventh hole.

Closest to the pin prizes went to Bukmir and Phil Pata Jr.

Another opportunity for area youth to experience golf and hone their skills in a tournament setting will be held on Wednesday, June 23 at Oglebay Park.

The annual Wheeling Elks Lodge #28 will hold its tournament and it’s once again free to enter. The event will include a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. with the ages 10-18 playing at Crispin and those aged 7-9 will play on the par 3 course.

Girls and boys aged 10-12 will play 18 holes from the gold tees, while girls aged 13-15 will play 18 from the red tees. Boys aged 13-15 will play 18 from the white tees and girls aged 16-18 will play from the white tees and boys aged 16-18 will play from the blue tees.

Those playing on the par three course will begin at 11:30 a.m.

The top three finishes in each age division will receive a trophy with a four-player minimum in each division.

ZIEGENFELDERS YOUTH TOURNEY

WHEELING — The opportunities for area youth golfers to improve their games while competing at the same time are plentiful.

Another chance is scheduled for Thursday, June 17 at the Bloch Memorial Golf Course at Wheeling Park when the inaugural Ziegenfelders Youth Golf Tournament is staged.

Similar to the Ben Franklin Youth Tournament that was held many years ago, the event will consist of numerous divisions for boys and girls players with adjusted tee lengths.

There will actually be eight divisions combined. There will be a fourth and fifth grade division, sixth and seventh, eighth and ninth and 10th through 12th grade.

The competition for those in grades 8-12 will begin at 12:15 and the fourth through seventh graders will tee off at 1 p.m.

The entry fee for the event is $6 if the application is received by June 10. After that, however, the entry fee increases to $10.

Each participant will receive pizza and pop after the tournament.

WHEELING PARK GOLF LEAGUE

The league took advantage of the holiday weekend to get a two-day tournament in. The Play It Again Sports 36 hole Best Ball Championship was staged on May 29 and 30.

Lightner and Kupfer prevailed in a playoff over Davis and Mercer. Both teams posted scores of 129. They were three shots clear of Slonaker and Brickner. Klamut and Colley were fourth with a 141, while Wurtzbacher and Usenick were fifth with a 152.

In the handicap scoring, Rick and Ryan Richmond prevailed with a 118. They were a shot better than Schwertfeger and Evans. Mitchell and Campbell were third with a 120.

On May 25, the Gabe Benson and Joe Figaretti Memorial event was held.

Lightner prevailed with a 38. He was three shots better than Dave Yeager and four clear of Jim Druschel and Joe Wurtzbacher. Mike Woods rounded out the top five with a 40.

Dick Moore claimed the handicap scoring portion of the event with a round of 32. Dave Stauver also posted a 32, which is the same score as Jim Wade. Jim Ennis (35) and Bob Green (35) rounded out the placers.

THE ANNUAL Bellaire Touchdown Golf Scramble will be held on June 26 at Fairway River Links. The entry fee is $60 per person or $240 per team. THE SONS of Italy Bellaire Lodge #754 will hold its 22nd annual golf scramble to benefit scholarships and Cooley’s Anemia on Monday, June 14 at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course. The event will begin with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. The entry fee is $240 for a four-person team. There will be a skin’s game, team skill contests. The cost includes golf, cart, refreshments on the course and dinner after the round at the Haller Shelter. The top three teams will receive prizes, valued at $400, $200 and $100, respectively. THE 11TH Annual Vance Deihl Memorial Scholarship Scramble is being held on Saturday, July 17 at Cadiz Country Club. The entry fee is $75 per player with checks made payable to Vance Deihl Memorial Scholarship Fund. Please call to register and for tee times at 740-635-2069. The fee includes refreshments on the course, lunch at first turn, dinner after tournament, and prizes.

Deihl was a teacher, coach, and athletic trainer at Martins Ferry High School for 30 years. All proceeds benefit scholarships for Martins Ferry High School seniors.
